<p>Rygsøjlen er en af de stærkeste dele af kroppen. Samtidig er er den godt beskyttet, så det er faktisk svært at skade den. De fleste belastninger giver ikke varig skade.</p>
<p><strong>Solide knogler gør ryggen stabil</strong></p>
<p>Rygsøjlen er sat sammen af 24 solide knogler, ryghvirvler, der giver ryggen stabilitet. Hvirvlerne har små facetled, som sammen med ledbånd og muskler sikrer, at rygsøjlen hænger sammen og fungerer som en helhed. Hvirvlerne samles af led med bruskskiver, diskus, som er bløde og geleagtige. De giver ryggen bevægelighed og fungerer som støddæmpere, når vi går og løber.</p>

<p>Rygsøjlen er forstærket af ledbånd og omgivet af store, stærke muskler, som beskytter den, og som udfører de store bevægelser. Helt inde ved rygsøjlen sidder korte muskler, der styrer de små bevægelser.</p>

<p><strong>Fleksibel og bøjelig</strong></p>
<p>Rygsøjlen er S-formet (set fra siden) med et svaj i nakken, en krumning over brystdelen og et svaj i lænden. Krumningen medvirker til, at rygsøjlen er fleksibel og bøjelig.</p>
<p>De fleste bevægelser i ryggen foregår i den øverste del af halshvirvelsøjlen og i lænden. Men en bevægelse foregår aldrig kun ét sted i rygsøjlen. Hvis vi bøjer nakken, smitter bevægelsen af på den øvrige del af rygsøjlen. Hvis vi løfter en arm, forplanter bevægelsen sig til skulderen og videre til rygsøjlen.</p>
<p>Hvis man løfter og flytter en genstand, starter bevægelsen i arm og skulder. Hvis vi drejer os for at lægge genstanden ned, bevæger vi skulderen, bøjer os måske ned, retter os op igen. Hver bevægelse kræver nye kombinationer af strækninger og bøjninger.</p>

<p><span style="font-family:Arial;">Den internationale smerteforskningsorganisationen IASP definerer smerte som en personlig og ubehagelig oplevelse. Videre siger definitionen, at smerteoplevelsen består af to dele: </p>

<strong>Diffuse smerter.</strong><br />
Smerter stammer altid fra et sted i kroppen og er tegn på, at noget i kroppen ikke fungerer, som det skal. Smerter kan skyldes alvorlige skader eller sygdomme, som kan og skal behandles. Men de smerter, som de fleste mennesker får i muskler og led, har sjældent en entydig årsag og kaldes derfor også diffuse smerter. Den slags smerter er ikke farlige, men kan være pinefulde og skal tages alvorligt.<br />
Vi reagerer forskelligt.</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family:Arial;">Vi ved alle, hvordan det føles at have ondt. Men vi reagerer forskelligt. Ligesom vi beskriver smerten forskelligt. Den måde vi reager og beskriver smerten på, afhænger af hvem vi er, situationen vi er i, hvilke erfaringer vi har med smerte, hvilke holdninger vi har til smerte og hvilke forventninger, vi har til den der lytter til beskrivelsen. </p>
<p><strong>Oplevelsen er fysisk og psykisk.</strong><br />
Smerter skyldes en fysisk påvirkning, som nervesystemet reagerer på. Reaktionen er både fysisk, fx at flytte sig eller forsøge at kompensere for det, der gør ondt &#8211; og psykisk: vi bliver forskrækkede eller angste, hvilket så giver fysiske stressreaktioner som fx hjertebanken, åndenød og svimmelhed.<br />
Oplevelsen af smerte er, lidt forenklet sagt, summen af den kropslige og den følelsesmæssige del. Én person kan således opleve smerten som ni dele ”krop” og en del ”sjæl”, mens en anden kan opleve det modsatte. Begge har lige ondt, men fordelingen er afgørende for, hvordan den enkelte reagerer på sin smerte. <br />
<span style="font-family:Arial;"><br />
<strong>Følelser og smerte.</strong><br />
At få ondt i ryggen eller nakken kan være skræmmende, især hvis man ikke ved, hvad der sker, hvorfor det sker, og ingen synes at have noget godt svar. Det er en hel normal reaktion at blive bekymret og frygte, at smerten ikke går over, at man mister kontrol, at man bliver invalid, mister arbejde, familie og indtjening. <br />
</span><span style="font-family:Arial;"><br />
Nogle bliver vrede på ryggen, på arbejdet, på en ulykke, på lægen, som ikke kan give en ordentlig forklaring. Hvis smerten fortsætter i lang tid, øges risikoen for angst og depression. Samtidig har en person med angst og depression større risiko for at udvikle kronisk smerte.<br />
